Good morning/afternoon!!! In my update last night I promised a list of the items that your money will be going toward. The diagnosis that she was given is Malignant Neoplasm of the tip and lateral border of the tongue, as well as Dysphasia. At this point in the process we are still preparing for her surgery, so we will not know the severity of her treatment, whether it be chemo, radiation or both, and post-op care. At this point what we do know is that VA insurance is only covering 80% of all procedures, medications, and her time at the hospital; the rest is up to us! Due to the location of the cancer they are going to be taking about 2" of her tongue and the surrounding lymph nodes just as a precaution. With such a big portion of her tongue being gone she will have to learn to speak and eat all over again. She will be getting her nutrients through a tube as she is re-learning to chew and regain the function of her jaw, tongue and neck muscles (everything that is required to chew and swallow.)
As we all know cancer is a very scary, discouraging, intimidating nightmare that can break even the strongest of men/women. More often than not our fear and sadness will get the best of us. Unfortunately, insurance does not cover any kind of support/counseling for this issue, family and friends can only do so much in that department, so part of the donations will go towards that service as well.
I will be updating everyone as she goes through this grueling process to assure you all that your generosity is not futile.
From my family to yours, we thank you and are unbelievably grateful....
Sincerely,
Lindsay and Family
