Hi, my name is Jacob Seymour. I am currently 20 years old and I am a Junior at Montana State University, studying Cell Biology and Neuroscience. In one year, I will be applying to several medical schools, and given that am accepted, I will pursue a career as a Anesthesiologist.
The decision to pursue the prestigious title of “Doctorâ€Â did not happen over night. A little over three years ago, my mother was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. This news was devastating, and we almost lost her to this aggressive cancer. But due to the grace of God and extensive treatment and care at the University of Washington Medical Center, she pulled through, and although currently facing the strains of Graft Versus Host Disease (a disease that occurs after a bone marrow transplant, and varies in severity from person to person), she is doing well today, and I cannot thank the Lord enough. Throughout the experience of staying with her in Seattle, and making daily visits to the hospital and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, something inside me changed. A passion grew, and a great amount of respect for those in the medical field arose. I decided that I wanted to dedicate my life to the study of medicine. I wanted to become a doctor, and do everything in my ability to cure the sick, the broken, the wounded, and the dying. I felt then, and I feel now, that that is my calling in life.
My initial years in college were spent at a smaller community college, where I got the basics of my education under my belt. Now I am at living in Bozeman, Montana, attending Montana State University, a larger college with a larger student population (also a larger tuition bill). Currently, I am living with two roommates, I am getting by with scholarships and working part time while being a full-time student at MSU. I realize even more now that living is an expensive thing. Sometimes I even find myself unable to eat more than one meal a day due to the lack of finance. On one occasion I have even had to ask my mother, who is struggling with extensive medical debt from her chemotherapy treatments and stay in Seattle, for some help with my rent. This I am not proud of. But for now, my life has stabilized, and again, by Gods grace, I am getting by.
I have a year left at MSU after this semester, and I am eagerly awaiting the moment when I step into the medical school that I will attend. I would very much like that school to be the University of Washington, but I am leaving the opening and closing of doors to God. For now all I can do is focus on keeping my grades high, and work on strengthening my resume. God has gifted me with a sharp mind, and as long as I apply myself, I can maintain all A’s, which I currently am. But there is one thing looming on the horizon which I am concerned about: the astronomical price of medical school tuition. The average debt of a graduated medical school student is $150,000, and even this price deviates significantly depending on which school you attend. Also, most medical schools do not offer financial aid in the form of scholarships, and usually only allow student loans. I have been praying extensively about this, and I have full faith in God that He will provide me with finance where I will need it. One of the verses I go back to when I am beginning to worry is Matthew 6:25-27. As it is written:
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?â€Â Matthew 6:25-27
I want to thank all the people taking the time to read my post. I am hoping that, through the opportunity that this website provides, fellow believers who are blessed in the area of finance will see this post, and after praying about it, donate  some money to fund my journey to becoming a Doctor if they feel that God called them to do so.
Ultimately, I ask that after reading this, you would send a prayer up for me and my journey. There are many twists and turns in the road ahead of me, and I am sure that prayer will help keep my faith strong during trials and in times of testing. Thank you very much for you time! May God bless you.
Jacob Seymour
