Through my yoga teacher training at Kashi Atlanta Ashram, I am learning that there are many different kinds of yoga. Yoga is a lifestyle which includes practicing "off the mat." One important type of yoga is Bhakti, or Karma Yoga - the practice of selfless service, or Seva . Our class is working on a Karma project to put together 400 backpacks filled with much needed supplies for the Peachtree Pine Shelter.
Since 1981, in coordination with the Metro Atlanta Task Force for the Homeless, PPS has helped several hundred thousand individuals obtain permanent housing, employment, transportation, and health care. The mission of the shelter is to meet the immediate and emergency needs of our city's homeless population, with dignity and respect, and to foster ongoing social change toward the goal of "no person left outside."
The shelter has a resident volunteer program which supplies housing needs for individuals for 3-6 months in exchange for 24 volunteer hours per week towards the operation of the organization, and also trains them to be leaders in the community. Residents may also participate in an urban farming internship, by working in the center's organic rooftop garden. In a cooperative effort with Truly Well Living, the rooftop garden consists of 80 raised beds (and a beehive) which the residents and volunteers sustainably tend to produce a variety of fresh, organic food which is then distributed to community farmers markets and restaurants.
But the shelter's primary purpose is to meet the immediate needs of our city's less fortunate. To this end, they are constantly in need of blankets, clothing, food, and toiletries.
My project team is tasked with obtaining toiletries for the care packs, which will consist of a backpack, a tshirt, water bottle, homemade cookies, a toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, and soap, and distributed to 400 very grateful individuals over the weekend of April 9-10.
Please help me to meet my goal for this very important community project. If you have access to toothbrushes, toothpaste, or travel size shampoo/soap, and can donate those specific items, that would be of great help. Monetary donations are appreciated as well, to help with the items that will need to be purchased. Any amount, even $1, will help me toward my goal! My sincere and heartfelt gratitude goes out to each and every one of you who will support me in any way in this endeavor.
Much love, Carissa
